The late spring cottage

Spring has been a busy time at Briar Patch Cottage. We’ve hosted quite a few PCT hikers, couples, small families on spring break getaways, and visitors for weddings. We started the season with blustery wind and snow, and are finishing it with gentle warmth and sunshine.

The cottage garden is having a moment of glory, coming out of dormancy seemingly overnight just mid-May with a spectacular show. Red Valerian is currently dominating, but the roses are in bud and aren’t too far behind. A surprising amount of half-tender plants successfully survived the winter and are already in full display of bloom, giving the garden quite a head start on the season. Established perennials from yesteryear are emerging larger than ever. Local pollinators are frequent visitors, and are such a pleasure to observe. Overall just teeming with life; it is a joy to behold.

Of course, the surrounding town of Julian is also abuzz with activity. Flower and berry-picking at U-pick orchards, wine tours, events in town every weekend… with so much going on, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Historic Downtown Julian, with all of its shops and eateries, is only a few doors down from the cottage, making it conveniently located for partaking in local festivities.
