It’s almost summertime in Julian, and the garden at Briar Patch Cottage has tipped into full bloom. English garden roses, laden with buds, are beginning to blossom. Swallowtail butterflies flutter over ruby heads of spur valerian, while bumblebees swirl around bell-adorned spires of foxgloves. Tiny paws of neighborhood kittens explore garden paths, under emerging blue spikes of salvia and delphinium. High above, among lichen covered branches of the garden’s steward pine, Mountain Chickadees whistle to visitors below. The Briar Patch, in all of its liveliness, has heralded the start of summer.

This relatively new garden is an ongoing passion project of the host. Previously a neglected lot of blackberry briars, English roses were among the first additions to this space 18 months ago. Since then, additional plantings and features have resulted in the creation of a whimsical cottage garden. An enjoyable haven for wildlife and guests alike, and a soothing summer retreat in the mountains of San Diego.

Meanwhile, Julian itself has entered a season of carefree abundance, with entertainment and enjoyment opportunities all through the summer. Presently, Local orchards offer tours and U-pick events for seasonal berries and flowers. The town hall and local businesses concurrently host a variety of special events to appeal to a range of interests. Of course, Julian always serves pie, whatever the season! The cottage is conveniently located within walking range to most events, making it a perfect home-base for any Julian getaway.
