I adore this drive. There is a point, right around park headquarters, where there is a distinct shift in climate and elevation, marked by the growth of sudden swaths of native deciduous trees among the landscape of pine and coastal live oak (which are evergreen).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9438-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9438-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9438-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9438-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9438-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9438-2-1620x1080.jpg 1620w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9438-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9438-2.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> Around the third week of October the leaves of these trees start to turn- slowly at first, almost imperceptibly- a hint of yellow here and there. The next week- the week of Halloween- orange starts to show up, blazing ribbons of copper through the dark green mountainsides. By the first week of November, fall is in its full glory in this little pocket of wilderness, and one could easily forget they&#8217;re in San Diego County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img src=\"https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9452-2-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-437\" width=\"841\" srcset=\"https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9452-2-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9452-2-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9452-2-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9452-2-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9452-2-720x1080.jpg 720w, https:\/\/briarpatchcottage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/IMG_9452-2.jpg 1365w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s an ephemeral display that blows out overnight, sometime the following week, like a candle in the wind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I witnessed this for the first time last year (on my way to see the cottage for the very first time!) and I was completely awestruck; firstly, because I had never seen fall color before (as a native San Diegan), and secondly, because NO ONE mentions it! It&#8217;s a thing! Here in our back yard!
